About NavSim Technology

NavSim Technology Inc. (NavSim™) is an innovative software and hardware R&D firm focused on electronic navigation solutions for both land and marine applications.

NavSim™ was founded in 2002 as a spin-off from the National Research Council’s Institute for Marine Dynamics, now known as the Institute for Ocean Technology (IOT).

A private company, NavSim™ was formed by Piotr Waclawek, Ph.D. a former NRC senior research scientist specializing in marine hydrodynamics and naval architecture.

NavSim™ headquarters and development team are located in St. John’s, Newfoundland, employing a team of enthusiastic and creative individuals.

Prior to joining NavSim in 2009 as Director of Business Development and Communications, Alvin directed a broad range of business development, strategic planning and communications activities for marine industry clients. In his new role with NavSim, Alvin is responsible for leading efforts to develop and deliver innovative new marine navigation solutions to recreational and professional mariners internationally.

Jim’s marine experience spans over 27 years and encompasses research, design, construction and navigation work with numerous classes of commercial, naval and government vessels. Prior to his appointment with NavSim, Jim spent 10 years in marketing and sales management roles with major professional marine manufacturers.

 

Founder: Dr. Piotr Waclawek

NavSim™ Founder and Creator of BoatCruiser. A leader in the field of marine engineering, Dr. Waclawek was internationally recognized for his work on the numerical modelling of ship hydrodynamics, the application of wavelets analysis in digital signal processing, and the integration of neural network and fuzzy logic in ship control and parameter estimation.

He held a PhD in Technical Science, specializing in Naval Hydromechanics and a Master of Science in Naval Architecture from the Wroclaw University of Technology. Dr. Waclawek served as NavSim’s President and CEO from 2001 until his untimely passing in January 2010.

They use the very latest software development tools from Microsoft, and everything just works so much better on my PC - screen manipulation of charts for example is MUCH faster than any tool I'd used before. Zooming in and out of charts, dragging charts around, rotating them etc iss just much better in this product. I am also an aviator, and the software works well both on the water and in the air! It supports 8 different types of charts, including C-MAP, S57, as well as the standard BSB charts. It has all sorts of useful route planning features, simulations, tons of options for configuring screen displays, fuel cost analysis for trips based upon fuel burn profiles, and supports a bunch of different input devices beyond just a GPS and Autopilot. Another really awesome feature is the ability to drag and drop any documents on to the charts and annotate the charts with things like photos or cruise notes (which I do with aerial photos). It really is a stellar product. Navsim has a small, top notch software development team that responds to customer input! Many of the aviation-specific suggestions I submitted actually found their way into the product! I have shown it to a number of fellow boaters in my marina and many of them have adopted NavSim software as well now."
